Story Ideas

These are some ideas for my short video story. They are all aimed at children and the family. They are all working ideas but it would be great if you could read the three ideas and leave a comment telling me what you think about them and which idea you like the best. You can comment by clicking on the comment link under this post. You don't have to register and log in or anything. Thanks!

Idea 1 - Childs drawn character

This is a story about a child (maybe 8ish) that draws a simple character only to find that it comes to life. He then plays with this small character that kind of sits in his hand etc. Then the child grows up. (this is where the story has various routes that i could use)

He grows up and forgets about the friend and then when he's older realises that he wished he hadnt stopped playing with him as he cant find the little friend now.

or

the character is recycled or rubbed out and so that child has to re-draw the character for it to come back to life.

or (this is my favourite)

every child has a small friend but as you grow up and stop playing with it the friend dissapears (the friend represents childhood). But this child doesnt want to loose his friend so he keeps playing with it and now even at 70 years old(ish) he still has his little friend even though all other adults have forgotten them and lost them.

Idea 2 - The Toothbrush

An old toothbrush is happily used by a child every day. He sits on the shelf in the bathroom on his own but he is happy because he is always used. Then one day he is not used and instead is replaced by a new young snobish toothbrush. He is told he is too old to clean teeth now and has been replaced by someone younger. The old toothbrush is sad until the child then uses him to clean boots and hes happy again.

Idea 3 - Naughty Character

This could be a life size character that hides in places around the house or a school. He plays practical jokes on people. But then he is caught and something happens that makes him not be mean anymore and he is then nice and helps people.

What do you think? I personally think the top one with the third ending where the character represents childhood but please let me know what you think. Thank you :D

yep idea 1 sounds really good and the 3rd ending too but would that endnig mean you have to do tonnes of drawing?? the toothbrush idea was great too, my least favourite idea was the life size mischief maker story. go idea 1!! xx

I actually really like the first concept but I think that it needs to be developed more - perhaps having the ending being a wink and a smile kind of affair. something where you would think "Oh how sad he's been forgotten about" but then the old man sits down to fix a modle, like an airplan or something and then the little animated character shows up to make sure he fits inside it - or a model boat! Ah then youcan film at the boating pond in Bath's Victoria Park.

Idea 1 sounds the best! its original and has so much space for inspiration and variasions of the later plot line.

I like idea one- i like the way it could represent that no-one really wants to lose their chld within. Although I also like idea two- it's quirky and I like teeth! Amy Myers x

I agree with the second comment - idea two is initially the most striking with the moral of 'you can be useful at any age' being easy to interpret. However, idea one gives more scope for character development and to demonstrate a greater artistic ability - toothbrushes are perhaps too simplistic in their shape. Idea one can appeal to a variety of audiences as well; older people can identify with losing the fun of childhood whilst a younger audience will enjoy the 'magic' element of an image having a life of its own. And i've completely forgotten idea three which shows how inferior it is! Clare x

I think that idea 1 is definitely the strongest as i think it has the greatest potential for development.
I think the child should forget about the friend until he is old and recreates him accidentally one day. This plot would address childhood nicely and the idea of it being lost. Also the idea of reflection when being reminded of your past and how things aren't really lost just misplaced or unused.
Sort of like teaching a lesson as well as being a story, that adults can relate to and children can enjoy but also learn from.
Love the idea of a drawing coming to life. And i also like the toothbrush story and how it was old but still had a place in the world/use. Not so keen on 3, a bit more of an overdone story.
hope that's helpful

Hey mate.
personally i think idea 2 is the best and has applications for both children and family audiences, can also see many different ways iin which you can protray this story, so being the most versatile idea in my view. I vote for concept 2

Cool, all very good ideas! I do like number 2, it sounds like it would be a lot of fun, but number 1 appeals to me as well - it reminds me a bit of Penny Crayon, one of my favourite cartoons as a kid (yeah, I know I'm old... don't rub it in) I liked the idea that the 'friend' is still then when he's much older - and the idea offered in the comments about a toy boat or similar - maybe that the 'owner' is making for their grandson - and so you can finish with the grandson's 'friend' and the star's 'friend' sailing off into the sunset :-)

Can't wait to see the final film, whichever you choose!

Ok, i dont mind not being anon: its Lou. I think the first ideas is the best as you sed, i like the third ending...i think maybe if you were clever you could show that the drawing represents the fact that all of us have an 'inner child' and those who have lost their drawing (sense of fun) are missing something from their life, maybe in the animation the guy could keep the 'drawing' in his chest pocket so its close to his heart?

I do like number 2 but I think I prefer number 1. I think the idea of a little friend that stays with him forever is clever and its almost like real life. Many people when they are young have imaginary friends but as they grow up they disappear and dont stay with them forever. It also shows that you're never too old to be young like a little child!

Now then my young relative! I like the first idea - and like you say the third ending - representing childhood. It minds me a little of the wee mouse out of the Green Mile and how the old geezer still has him.

if you need anymore help wiv ideas then jus give me a shout. I like to feel like i'm achieving something with my life rather than the mundane life of work, work and more work i'm living at the minute!
